It came down to the teak oil and the Minwax polyurethane . I was not a fan of how orange/dark the stain choices were, but picking a product intended for floors was probably a good choice. The Teak oil shouldn’t have a color (because it’s just teak oil), but it isn’t recommended minwax vs varathane for floors. The Minwax Poly is made specifically for floors and didn’t look that bad… but again, looked kind-of orange. Like Teak Oil, the Varathane Polys were also not intended for floors. We just didn’t like the color of the varathane samples in matte or satin.
Among water based polyurethanes, most experts agree that Bona is the best brand, and specifically Bona Traffic line. There are some people who apparently could desperately use reading comprehension here though. He’s not telling you to shake the can, he’s telling you that bubbles will appear in the finish no matter what which is true. Not only is this a tricky procedure that will lead to sagging if you aren’t careful to keep the finish thin on the surface , but the procedure doesn’t make any sense. It’s not gravity causing one brush-mark ridge to sag into another that reduces brush marking. It’s gravity evening out the difference between the ridges and the troughs that eliminates brush marking.

I’ve seen lots of discussions about sealing cabinets with wipe-on or brush-on poly. Personally, I would choose wipe-on polyurethane to ensure there were no brush strokes or drips. Cabinets see substantial moisture and use, so it would require quite a few coats to ensure adequate protection. However, it’s worth the extra time for a perfect finish. In the interest of efficiency, it is best to use wipe-on poly on surfaces that won’t see quite as much wear and tear, such as furniture legs, trim, bookshelves, etc.

If you’re referring to interior stains, my answer would be completely different than for exterior stains. For interior, I’m of the opinion that any stain you’re well versed in and can accomplish a consistent, repeatable, professional finish, then that’s the best stain to use. As you know, so much of staining is knowing what to do and what to use in certain situations to achieve a particular outcome. Affordability is one of the greatest advantages of polyurethanes. It is such that the major reason they are getting really popular is that with the many advantages they have, one should expect to have some ‘deep pockets’ to afford them. All the grey wood stain colors were tested on birch plywood, maple, poplar, pine, and oak. Each piece was sanded with 150 grit sandpaper, and was not treated with any kind of wood conditioner before applying the stain.
Wiping varnishes are just great, but what they amount to is the regular product with a thinning agent added. They prove to be more expensive than the standard products. If you use the following process, you do not need a specialized wiping varnish. minwax vs varathane The regular stuff works just fine – the process does the thinning for you. My second favorite color was Minwax Coastal Gray. It also created sufficient coverage with just one coat, and is a little lighter than the General Finishes.
